1-21-11 Plenty of backcountry fish!

Matt Waddell and his son Jay, first timers at Florida Keys Fishing promised to come back every year after a full day with Captain Jim Willcox. They caught their limit of snappers, & many mackerel,bluefish , Ladyfish, 4  pompano, and a big blacktip shark Jay's first!!!  Very exciting stuff fishing in Islamorada!  Capt. Rick Stancyk had regulars Rob and his buddy Lee from NJ and they reported catching many redfish as well as snappers, trout, pompano, and a handful of mackerels.  Caught a few pompanos and jacks on fly as well!

1-19-11 Great backcountry and offshore action!

Capt. Rick Stanczyk reported catching many redfish close to 40 in about half an hour in the backcountry today.  They also caught some trout, ladyfish, and jacks nearby.  Had a couple shark bites while putting the big rods out but couldn't keep 'em on.  Later on they caught plenty of mackerel and snappers on the edge of the gulf.  Capt. Bill Bassett and Ken Cohan also reported lots of trout, ladyfish, mackerel, and snappers fishing towards the edge of the gulf.  Capt. Nick Stanczyk had a nice catch of sails today, the Relentless with Capt. Paul Ross had several nice large cobia some over 50 lbs, as well a the Kalex, and plenty of king mackerel on the docks!

Great redfish bite close to home! 1-17-11

Well it was very rainy and windy this morning fishing in the florida keys with some severe storm warnings on the weather channel, but Capt. Jim Willcox managed to still get out this morning and have an incredible day!  They caught over 100 redfish up to 19 inches within sight of Bud n' Mary's in Islamorada fishing!  Very rare having redfish this close to home as they are usually back further in the everglades, especially in numbers like these!  You never know what could happen on a florida fishing charter! GREAT cobia fishing for Catch 22! 1-16-11

There has been some fantastic cobia fishing down here in Islamorada, Florida Keys.  The Catch 22 caught there limit here today, and letting many others go.  About 12 cobias up to 65 lbs, 20 kings, and a nice sail!  Check it out, way to go Capt. Scott Stanczyk!  Fishing for cobias is usually great this time of year, all the way through February!  The cold waters in the gulf of mexico have flushed many of these fish out into the warmer Atlantic ocean.  These fish are caught often by spotting large rays, turtles, and other large sea creatures, which have the schools of fish following them.  Live baits are casted with heavy weights to sink them to the bottom in front of the fish, often live grunts are favorites of the larger fish!  Sometimes you will see cobia on the surface tailing as well, this is very cool when you can sight cast and watch them eat!  As the waters warm up with stable weather, the fish should pop back up in the gulf on the wrecks and structures there, offering great sportfishing opportunity to those vessels there, including many backcountry guides who fish the edge of the everglades national park!  Come on down and let's go fishing!  1-800-742-7945 - Bud n' Mary's Fishing Marina

 

1-16-11 - Backcountry action!!

Capt. Rick Stanczyk fished Howard and Mike today for a full day in the backcountry off of Islamorada, Florida Keys.  We had incoming tide most of the day, so we ran and fished the edge of the gulf of mexico to fish for spanish mackerel.  The mackerel bite was great!  We stopped at some sunken debris down off long key.  Caught probably 2 dozen, and a dozen or so nice mangrove snappers.  After this we ran further out in the the gulf, and hit a couple more spots in hops of fishing for cobia or maybe getting a nice goliath grouper or shark.  Unfortunately the water was still a little chilly, in the low 60s, so we didn't have much luck with anything except some small jacks.  We ran back into the park around 11:30 and caught the last of the in tide in a little runoff and caught some nice trout and ladyfish!  When that dried up, we moved to another runoff a couple miles away, and caught the beginning of the falling tide.  Some more trout and ladyfish, and we also caught half a dozen pompanos which was a nice surprise!  No redfish, and had to cut our trip a little short before the tide got low enough for them to stack up, but great action and variety fishing the florida everglades!
