5-20-11 Big MAKO! Lots of Mahi too...

The Reel McCoy did it again. It's the 3rd big Mako Capt. George has caught the past few years here in Islamorada, FL. They caught and released the 400-500 lb Mako Shark yesterday while dolphin fishing. They saw the shark swimming on the surface, then baited her up and after a 90 minute fight, getting some pics and video, they released the fish. The past few days has provided the best dolphin bite of the year. Mostly schoolie sized fish (3 to 10 lbs), but lots of them. Most boats have been limiting out. There's also been a few tuna around, as well as amberjack and grouper. Get on down here for your Florida Fishing Charter!

Offshore 5/14/11 to 5/16/11

The offshore fishing continues to be decent. The dolphin fishing has been fair, not great, and the boats have been putting together decent catches on full days. There's also been some blackfin tuna around, not as big as the April fish, but still plenty over 10 lbs with a few over 20. We did a daytime swordfish charter yesterday on the BNM and released a small sword about 30 lbs. We also had a few bites we missed. In between the dolphin and tuna fishing the "humps" have been producing some big amberjack to 50 lbs as well. Get on down for you offshore fishing trip in Florida.

Fishing on Friday the 13th? Sounds good...

We took Blaire Howard out today aboard the BNM for a Daytime Swordfish Charter. I know it was Friday the 13th, but I figured we still had a shot. We make it out to the grounds and on the first drop we hook up. Twenty minutes later, Blaire puts his first ever swordfish on the deck. Not a monster, but a 50 lber, perfect for dinner. We also have a few dolphin swim up to us and we catch a handful of those. We make a few more drops for swords, missing a couple cheap bites. We finally hook up again with another sword and Blaire releases about a 25 lber! With a fish in the boat and a release, we head home. We stop and catch a couple of more dolphin on the way home before hitting the dock. Yesterday we went on a reef fishing trip and caught 25 yellowtail snapper, two king mackerel, a nice black grouper, and a few other reef dwellers. It was a lot of action in the afternoon after a slow start in the morning.
