New Yorkers and their sharks!

We had life long buddies John and Eric down from New York today for a Florida Keys Fishing Charter. They wanted something BIG! So we went out for some SHARK FISHING! We started out catching a few small tuna for bait, and for dinner. Next they both caught nice amberjacks in the 40 to 50 lb range. After we had our shark bait it was time for some chumming. We started drifting and had a nice chum slick when Eric spotted a good sized hammerhead shark. We couldn't get him to eat, so after a little while we re-set and started chumming again. We had a really big slick going this time, and within 5 minutes the rod goes off. John wanted his friend Eric to catch the biggest fish of his life, and he did. After a 45 minute battle, Eric had an estimated 300 lb Hammerhead boatside! We took a few quick pictures and video, then released the shark unharmed. We were using a circle hook which is really good for catch and release because they hook the fish in the corner of the mouth compared to deep down like a J-Hook can do. These guys are going back to New York with a nice fish story!

4/19/11 Tuna, Mahi, and Spring Time Wind!

We had Jeff and his buddies Bob, Richie, and Harry out today aboard the BNM. We fished a morning 1/2 day Fishing Trip and wound up running out to the "Hump" for some Tuna. After catching plenty of live bait we chugged out about 13 miles to one of the local sea mountains and began fishing. The tuna bite was still decent, not quite as good as earlier in the week, but we still managed to catch 4 nice blackfin tunas in the 15 - 20 lb range with a handful of 5 lbers. We also had a couple of mahi mahi. When we got in we sent the gang over to Lazy Days Restaurant with fresh tuna and mahi for Lunch! Can't beat that! The calm weather we've had the last couple of weeks looks like it's gone for a few days with the east wind blowing a little bit. The wind should help the Mahi fishing over the next few days, and hopefully start the Mahi season right! Get on down here for your Florida Keys Fishing Vacation!

Offshore Fishing Report!

We fished long time friends/co-workers Tom and Damon yesterday aboard the BNM. First thing in the morning Damon asked me if I thought he had a shot at a sailfish. I said "there's a few around still, but not like in the winter time, but you never know." So we catch plenty of pilchards on the way out, and then head offshore. We start catching blackfin tuna's, some real nice ones up to 28 lbs. Damon gets a bite, and up comes a sailfish! But No! He jumps on, we lost him. Damon saw the fish he wanted to catch, but it didn't last long. We start catching a few more tunas, a dozen total, but Damon hooks one last fish. It starts acting a little different, and next thing you know, its a big Atlantic Sailfish jumping all over the ocean. After a 20 minute fight, Damon catches and releases his first sailfish! Congrats! We then caught an amberjack about 30 lbs and headed back towards shore. We stopped on a couple of wrecks, catching a couple of bonito, and also caught and released a nice Gag Grouper about 18 lbs. It was a great day for a FLORIDA FISHING CHARTER!

Most of the other boats had tuna as well, and I saw the Fearless and Predator both had a handful of mahi mahi. Any day now the Mahi fishing should start being consistent.

HOT Offshore Fishing in Islamorada!

After a great first day of swordfishing for Jens Laub, we continued to put him on the fish the past 3 days. We caught another broadbill swordfish on Thursday, as well as 20 dolphin. On Friday he wanted to try for something else, so we got in on the hot blackfin tuna bite, catching 18 tunas to 28 lbs, as well as 5 amber jack to 70 lbs. Right at the end of the day Jens also caught and released a beautiful sailfish. Today, Saturday, was his last day of fishing. We went back to our planned daytime swordfish charter and on the first drop Jens released about a 40 lb swordfish. We had one more bite we missed, fished for a few more hours with but then called it a day. The Catch 22 also swordfished today and after a long battle they boated a 205 lb broadbill swordfish. Florida Keys Fishing is phenomenal right now!
