Backcountry Fishing Report 4/23/08 Capt. Skip Neilsen

Capt. Skip had his wife Cyd Nielsen went in the backcountry with their niece Mandy from Knoxville along with her fiancee Brandt Snedeker. (He placed 3rd in the Masters golf gournament in Augusta, Georgia!) Cyd & Mandy each caught grand slams of tarpon, redfish, and snook! Last night Brandt released his first really big tarpon, an estimated 140 lbs, caught with a live mullet. The westerly winds as of late have the tarpon fishing a little off, but the snook bite out west of Cape Sable was very good. Skip had 16 releases today and kept a 31" for dinner!

Well the dolphin have finaaly started moving in. The back side of this moon usually proves to be pretty good. The Yellowtail bite has been very good with some 3-4 pounders being caught in the deeper water. The kingfish bite is steady and there have been quite a few Sailfish still being caught along with the cobia. We had a great couple days there limiting out on the yellowtails and kings. We also have been puttin a hurtin on the permits with one going well over thirty pounds. Summer is finally here and I look forward to some great offshore fishing,

the west amd northerly wind has finally switched back to the east. windy but the tarpon bite picked up some last night. Nick Toone visiting from England released 2 tarpon in the 100lb. class. one very happy angler.
also the sailfish were tailing with the wind yesterday and at least 40 sailfish release flags were flying high on the outriggers at the end of yesterday.
