10-24-12 Offshore Fishing and Reef Fishing Report

The wind has definitely been blowing here the past few days, and it looks like it's going to continue to blow throughout the weekend. But the great thing about Fishing in Islamorada is when its too rough to head far offshore it leaves an option for reef fishing, which is where most of the boats focus their attention in the late Fall Months and Winter Months. Today the Relentless had an incredible days Florida Keys Sailfishing, releasing 4 (including a triple header which is always exciting) on a 1/2 day. They also caught a bunch of yellowtail snapper for dinner. A couple other boats fished as well but didn't report any sails, which lets us know that they aren't here in full swing yet, but definitely starting to show. Two days ago the Kalex released 5 sailfish, the Predator released 2, and the Relentless released 1 as well. That same day the BNM went on a Day time Swordfish Trip with Des from New Zealand. The wind was strong and the seas were rough, pushing the limits of a 34' boat. Knowing he traveled 1/2 way around the world to come here to fish for one day we gave it our best shot. The first drop we hooked a good sized sword, but unfortunately pulled the hook. The next drop we didn't have a bite. The wind continued to pick up to 20 - 22 knots, but we made one more drop and hooked a broadbill swordfish. Des made quick work of the fish, catching him in 20 minutes and Matt was able to get a good gaff shot on a 235 lb sword.
