2-29-12 Islamorada Fishing Trips Offshore and on the Reef
The reef fishing has been fair the last week. The kingfish thinned out but there has still been a few around each day. The tasty and delicious yellowtail snapper have been biting pretty well though. Most the boats have been anchoring down on the edge of the reef and catching plenty of snappers for a nice dinner. There's also been some black groupers being caught, but all have to be released till May 1st due to the closure. The Catch 22 released 2 sailfish yesterday and the Reel McCoy released 1, which was nice that there's still a couple sailfish in the area. The best catch yesterday came in right before sunset. Captain Alex Adler on the Kalex had Michael and his group out for a late departure tuna trip. The crew spent 2 hours catching bait in the skiff, and then headed way down south on a 2 hour run to one of the "Humps". They started chumming with live pilchards and within 3 hours they had boated 18 big blackfin tuna, most of them being 20 - 25 lbs! Great Catch guys! The tuna's haven't showed up off of Islamorada yet, but should move in any day up this way too! The BNM released an usual shark for here estimated at 125 lbs, which was believed to be a sandbar shark. There's also been some nice sized amberjack around which is always fun for a big pull.
