2-16-13 Offshore Fishing in Islamorada in Mid February
It's been a while since we've had a strong cold front here during our Islamorada Fishing, but today the cold front passed through and we had some great catches on the dock before the wind picked up. The Relentless hit a couple schools of cobia early in the day, catching 5 keepers up to 30 lbs, then followed it up with some yellowtail snapper, a couple decent size mutton snapper, and a bunch of king mackerel to 20 lbs. The sailfish bite has been pretty slow lately but this cold front definitely sparked a few to bite. The Bn'M released 2 sailfish, and also had a few king mackerel to 20 lbs, a 15 lb blackfin tuna, 15 snappers, and released 3 nice grouper (season is closed for shallow water grouper until May 1st). The Man O War and Gon Fishin V also were Deep Sea Fishing in Islamorada and each released a sailfish and there was a handful of blackfin tuna and king mackerel caught between them too. The Kalex had a mix bag of yellowtail snapper, king mackerel, a big mutton snapper close to 12 lbs, and a couple blackfin tuna. Yesterday while Islamorada Offshore Fishing in February there was a mix of fish caught as well. The Bn'M went out to the famed Islamorada Hump and did a little veritcl jigging with some tormenter jigs and landed a 40 lb amberjack, and also landed a 75 lb ambjerjack on a bait. The Relentless had a limit of king mackerel including one smoker that was 30 plus pounds and then thought they had a shark on but it turned out to be a big wahoo weighing in at 50 lbs! The Catch 22 had a nice catch of king mackerel and yellowtail snapper as well. The Kalex had a bunch of kids fishing with them, and a parent or two of course, and kept them busy with yellowtail snapper, king mackerel, and then found a school of cobia and caught two keepers including a nice 40 lber. As Spring approaches we'll still focus most of our attention on the Reef, but we will start venturing out further offshore and hitting the humps with a little regularity too. Both the Catch 22 and Bn'M swordfished one day each the past week but the bite has been slow no fish were caught, although it should pick up soon.
