3-27-13 Late March Fishing Offshore in Islamorada
I think we can all agree this has been the coldest March we can remember. We've had multiple cold fronts come through and temperatures have been well below normal. We had another very strong cold front pass through the last couple of days, and it definitely affected the fishing, but plenty of boats still got out and had a blast for their share of Islamorada Fishing! One thing we can't control is the weather, and it has been a little frustrating the past few days. On the morning of the 25th there was a band of bad weather including rain, lightning and lots of wind. A couple boats went out early, and a few of us stayed at the dock and waited patiently. After waiting till about 9:30 a.m. we finally decided to head out, as well as a few other boats. Some boats cancelled all together, because we know you don't want to sit around wasting your day if the weather doesn't improve. Anyhow the winds dropped down some and we had some clouds, but also a few appearances by the sun. The fishing wasn't red hot, but there was still plenty of happy people by the end of the day. The most action was on the reef while bottom fishing. I think every boat did very well on yellowtail snapper, most of them hitting their limit with these tasty morsels. There was a few king mackerel around as well as some bonitos. The bonitos aren't much for food value, their really "little tunny", but they are great fighters on light tackle. The boats also caught and released some barracuda to mix things up a little. Late in the day a few sailfish showed up and three boats each had one release, the Relentless, Gon Fishin V, and Predator. The Bn'M released a big 300 lb goliath grouper and a 150 lb bull shark. The Spring Shark Fishing should continues to get better and better in the deep sea. Now yesterday morning the winds were strong out of the north, I'm talking 20 - 25 knots. Forutnately when we have a north wind the ocean side isn't as rough as you would think. The landmass of the Keys blocks the waters from building with big waves. It's only 4 miles from shore to the edge of the reef where we fish mostly this time of year, and it's not very deep in that stretch. The morning was very cold, and the fishing was a little on the slow side. Live bait was tough to come by, but most of the boats still did good on the snappers on the reef and there was some nice size groupers caught and released as well. The sailfish bite was non existent for the guys that had live bait, but it is getting a little late in the season to count of them. Today live bait was still on the difficult side in the morning, but a few islamorada charter boats caught it, and since our guys work together well they shared it amongst each other. The snappers still were the best shot at action so most of the guys did that. There was also some bonitos and a few king mackerel around. The few mahi we were catching last week got tough lately since the north wind usually pushes them further from the reef, but the Fearless did have one suprise mahi, about a 10 lb bull. A few boats also caught some barracudas, the Kalex had a nice mutton snapper, and then real late in the afternoon a few of the boats that were patient finally got some shots at sailfish! The Gon Fishin V and Pretty Work each released double headers of sailfish to end their days! The Bn'M caught a nice african pompano as well. Let us show you the best florida keys fishing trips soon!
