3/13/15 Mid March Backcountry Fishing Report

March is near half over and it is a traditional spring time here.  Very windy weather this last week though fairly warm with little patches of rain but nothing serious.  The wind has howled just about every day we had a couple calmer days but most its been blowing 20 or more.  Fishing had been pretty good though as of late things have gotten a little tougher.  Tarpon are around though the bite has not been red hot most trips you have to put a good amount of time in for a bite or two.  Mullet have been starting to show up more and more we've had the big giant balls of mullet show up a few days.  I think once the wind lays down we should start seeing bigger schools of tarpon move into the channels and such.  Sharks have been fairly active a lot of blacktips, some big lemons, and variety of others.  Capt. Perry Scuderi had a good day with customers the other day they landed a big mud marlin and a nice cobia off of it.  Those customers fished the Gimmy Jimmy and caught quite a few wahoos and mahi today too.  Today Capt. Perry caught 1 out of 2 tarpon close to home.  They also had plenty of trout, ladyfish, and snappers on the light rods.  Capt. Mike Bassett reported a mud marlin as well yesterday.  Today Capt. Gunner caught a couple tarpon on a full day plus some snappers for dinner.  Capt. Rick Stanczyk reported some sharks, snappers, and 1 out of 2 tarpon yesterday.  Today they had one tarpon eat a live bait but they missed it, and a few other cheap shots, and landed some sharks.  Capt. Skip Nielsen had 77 year old Dick Alt land a monster tarpon in the backcountry a few days ago.  They landed it on FOX sportfishing tackle.  Capt. Jim Willcox reported some good redfish fishing way back in the everglades a few days ago as well.
