12-15-12 Fishing in Islamorada in December
There's only been a handful of boats fishing the reef off Islamorada the past few days, as this is typically not a super busy time down here before Christmas, but there's been some great catches out of Bud N' Mary's Marina. On the 13th the Bn'M caught and released 5 sailfish, the Relentless went offshore to look for tuna, but the tuna weren't cooperating, and then the came across a piece of wood floating and caught 20 mahi, mostly schoolies, but did have a couple gaffers to 15 lbs. Very unusual to catch that many mahi here in December! But that's why they call it fishing! After that They came back to the Reef for the afternoon and found a sailfish and then found a huge school of cobia! They caught their limit of cobia up to 52 lbs! The Reel McCoy also caught 2 sailfish and had half a dozen king mackerel, including 2 smokers (king mackerel 20+ pounds) weighing in a 31 and 36 lbs! They also had a lone blackfin tuna of about 15 lbs. Yesterday on the 14th the weather had changed completely, with a weak front passing through the night before. The Relentless caught and released 3 sailfish on a morning 1/2 day fishing trip, the Fearless released one sailfish as well, and the Bn'M caught 10 king mackerel up to 10 lbs, a lone mahi about 8 lbs, a couple just short groupers, as well as a couple barracuda. They lost their only sailfish bite. Get on down here for you own adventure and an Islamorada Fishing Trip!
