So you want to go SHARK fishing?

Jeff Williams of California and Mark Stevens of Kentucky teamed up Tuesday to release a total of 26 sharks. These guys wanted as much big fish action as they could get and they got it. Mostly lemon sharks with a 60lb goliath grouper thrown in as well. What happened was we had a big chill down in water temps and the sharks had gathered in a deep channel till it warmed back up. And were they ever hungry. Temps are supposed to back up to the low 90's by the weekend. All the sharks were released using light wire hooks that straigten out when the leader was held. lots of good video and Jeff and Mark took loads of pictures as well. Unfortuately I was so busy I did not get much for pictures.

2 very different days of fishing

Mike Galuska and his friends Billly and Jimmy from New Hampshire fished with me Friday,Oct.16. Bright and sunny and a near record 94 degrees. water temp 84. Fishing was great. Spent the morning action fishing with a nice limit of mangrove snappers, lots of spanish mackerel, released a bunch of trout and ladyfish. In the afternoon we drifted live pilchards around some backcountry islands releasing a couple nice snook and 2 tarpon. But Monday the 19th was a different story. Started out cold and windy and 58 degrees. We fished along the mainland catching a handful of trout, 1 snook,1 blackdrum and a lot of small snapper. Then we moved to where we had so much action Friday but it was dead. and we moved a couple more times and the same story. just a few fish. water temp 66. quite a change. But this weather will bring a massive migration of new fish our way.

Casting For Cats Tournament

Dr. Joanne Mahoney and Daryl Cullen of Key Largo fished this tournament Saturday with me. It was a day before a big cold front and the fish were biting for us. The girls released 10 snook,2 tarpon and jumped a bunch more off. Also caught some snapper, ladyfish and Spanish mackerel. It was enough to win the tournament. The proceeds of the tournament go to spading and neutering wild cats. It is a very good cause. thanks Ladies.

fishing vacations are great. even for a guide and his wife.

My wife. Cyd. with a big rainbow trout and me with a brown. caught on the Missouri river in Montana flyfishing in September.

My good friend Jim Whitley with a big cubera snapper and a roosterfish  while fishing with me in Panama last week.

now I am back guiding out of my favorite place to fish in the whole world ISLAMORADA!

yesterday had Al Rissan and his friend Noel from Boca Raton out in the backcountry. We had a blast fishing light spin and fly. There is a lot of Spanish mackerel showing up. we must have caught over 20 mostly released. plenty of fat mangrove snapper for a big dinner at Lazy Days. and trout, ladyfish, bluefish and small sharks really kept these guys busy. its good to be back.

Big Bull Shark

I had Lance Schillizzi and his good friend Kenny out today. Action fishing was very good. Caught a nice mess of mangrove snapper, trout, ladyfish and surprisingly 12 spanish mackerel. The macks are making an early showing. Well Lance wanted a good pull so we moved to a special spot for the afternoon. We chummed with mackerel and baited up with macks as well. The big pulls started right away with 2 75lb goliath grouper releases and a couple 50lb blacktip sharks. Then Lance hooked the big one. 1 hour and 45 minute battle in the hot afternoon sun. Lance hung in there and finally subdued a giant bull shark I estimated between 350 and 400lbs. Heck of a battle.  Nice going Lance.
